Live TV is the heart of IPTV — the reason most people subscribe at all. But what actually happens between pressing a channel and the picture appearing is worth understanding, because every symptom you will ever hit (buffering, judder, channels that work and channels that do not) traces back to how live TV is delivered. How live TV over IP works
A live channel is a continuous stream of video arriving at your player in small chunks. The chain looks like this:
- The broadcaster feeds a video signal into an encoder, which compresses it (H.264/H.265) and wraps it into a transport stream.
- Your provider's server receives the transport stream and repackages it for the internet — most commonly as HLS segments (a few seconds of video per file) or MPEG-TS over UDP/TCP.
- Your player requests the stream, buffers a short window, and plays. When you switch channels, the player requests the new stream and starts buffering again.

The channel line-up
An IPTV subscription in 2026 is not "a few channels" — it is thousands. - Bitrate: a 1080p channel at 6 Mbps looks different from the same channel at 2.5 Mbps. Bitrate determines how much detail survives compression, especially during fast motion like football.

The EPG (Electronic Program Guide) is an XMLTV feed your player downloads from the provider, containing the schedule for each channel — typically now/next plus several days ahead. Live streams are delivered continuously and watched in real time (or rewound via catch-up). VOD — movies and series — is delivered as discrete files you can pause, resume, and rewind freely.
