VOD, catch-up, and timeshift: what is the difference?
Three similar-sounding IPTV features, three different mechanics under the hood. Here is the difference between VOD, catch-up, and timeshift, when to use each, and how they interact in practice.
The line between "on-demand" and "live" has blurred over the last few years. VOD, catch-up, and timeshift all let you watch something that is not strictly live, but they are three different features with different underlying mechanics. This guide explains the difference and gives you a practical decision framework for when to use which.
VOD (Video on Demand)
VOD is a curated library of pre-recorded content — films, TV series, documentaries, and specials. Think of it as the "movies and shows" section of the service. The content is there permanently (or at least for the duration of licensing agreements), and you can browse, search, and play anything in the library at any time, independent of any live channel schedule.
Key characteristics of VOD:
- Permanent catalog — content is available 24/7, not tied to a broadcast schedule.
- Full playback control — pause, rewind, fast-forward, resume from where you left off.
- Multiple quality options — most VOD content is available in multiple resolutions, often up to 4K.
- Metadata-rich — cover art, synopsis, cast, genre, rating, release year.
- Subtitles and audio tracks — most modern VOD content includes multiple subtitle languages and audio tracks.
When to use VOD: You want to watch a specific film, start a TV series from episode one, or browse for something to watch without being constrained by what is currently airing. VOD is what you reach for when you want to choose what to watch, not when you want to see what is on.
Catch-up
Catch-up is a feature of a live channel that lets you rewind the live stream to a point in the recent past — usually the last 3 to 7 days. Catch-up is not a separate library; it is the same channel, rewound. You open the EPG, scroll back to a program that aired earlier, and select it. The player requests the archived stream segment from the server and starts playback from the beginning of that program.
Key characteristics of catch-up:
- Channel-specific — catch-up is only available on channels where the broadcaster provides an archive. Not every channel in the line-up supports it.
- Time-limited — the catch-up window is typically 3 to 7 days. After the window closes, the program is no longer available unless it also exists in the VOD library.

- Program-level granularity — you select a specific program from the EPG, not an arbitrary timestamp. The player seeks to the beginning of that program automatically.
When to use catch-up: You missed a live broadcast by a few hours or a few days. You heard about a segment on a news channel last night and want to watch it this morning. A live sports event aired while you were at work and you want to watch the replay. Catch-up is the bridge between live TV and on-demand viewing — it gives you the flexibility of VOD without requiring the content to be separately curated.
Timeshift
Timeshift is a player feature — not a server feature. The player maintains a local buffer of the live stream (usually 30 seconds to a few minutes) and lets you pause, rewind, and fast-forward within that buffer. Timeshift works on every channel, with every player that supports it, because it is entirely local to the device.
Key characteristics of timeshift:
- Local buffer — the player stores the last few minutes of the stream in memory or on disk.
- Works on every channel — no server-side support needed.
- Very short window — typically 30 seconds to a few minutes. Not suitable for watching something you missed an hour ago.
- Player-dependent — TiviMate supports timeshift on most streams. VLC supports it on all streams (it buffers everything by default). IPTV Smarters varies by platform.
When to use timeshift: You need to pause the live stream to answer the door, take a phone call, or rewind 30 seconds to catch a line of dialogue you missed. Timeshift is for micro-adjustments to the live stream, not for time-shifted viewing in the "watch it later" sense.
Decision framework: which to use when
- You missed the start of a live broadcast by 10 minutes: Timeshift — rewind to the beginning within the local buffer.
- You missed a live broadcast by 3 hours: Catch-up — open the EPG, scroll back, and play the program from the archive.
- You missed a broadcast by 2 weeks: Check VOD — if the content exists in the VOD library, watch it there. If it does not, it is gone.
- You want to watch a specific film that was released last year: VOD — search the catalog.
- You need to pause the live stream for 2 minutes: Timeshift — press pause on the remote. Press play when you are back.

How catch-up actually works — technical side
When you select a past program in the EPG, the player sends a request with channel ID, start time, and duration. The server locates the archived segment and streams it back as if it were live. Storage is the primary cost — a single 24/7 channel at 8 Mb/s generates ~84 GB per day. Multiply by the number of catch-up-enabled channels and retention window, and storage is measured in terabytes.
How VOD libraries are built
The 150,000-title library comes from: broadcast capture (films and series that air on live channels are automatically added), studio catalog feeds, user requests, and automated curation based on release date tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download VOD content for offline viewing?
Some players (IPTV Smarters, TiviMate Premium) support downloading VOD content for offline playback. Live TV and catch-up streams cannot be downloaded — they are real-time streams with no permanent file on the server.
Why is the VOD library different from what I see on Netflix?
VOD libraries in IPTV aggregate from multiple sources — broadcast recordings, studio catalog feeds, and international content. They are not curated by a single editorial team and follow different licensing windows. The VOD library is broader but less curated than any single streaming service.
How to request a missing VOD title
Most IPTV providers accept VOD requests from subscribers. If a specific film or series is not in the library:
- Check the VOD library search first — it may exist under a slightly different title or in a different category than expected.
- Submit a request through the provider's support channel with the exact title, year of release, and language preference.
- If the content was recently released (within the last 3-6 months), it may still be in theaters or on an exclusive streaming window and not available for VOD yet.
- If the content is older and broadly available, it typically appears in the VOD library within 48-72 hours of the request being processed.

Timeshift vs live buffer — what is the difference?
Timeshift is a feature you activate — pausing live TV creates a temporary recording that lets you resume from where you paused. The live buffer is automatic — the player continuously stores the last 30 seconds to 2 minutes of the stream so you can rewind without having pressed pause first. Both are local to the player and work on every channel regardless of catch-up support. The difference: timeshift requires you to press pause first; the live buffer is always running in the background. If you want to rewind something you did not pause, you can only go back as far as the live buffer — usually 30 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on the player and your device's available memory.
The future of IPTV time-shifting — what is coming
The next generation of IPTV catch-up goes beyond the 7-day window. Cloud DVR — where the provider stores your recordings on their servers rather than your device — is already available in some IPTV platforms. Instead of 7 days of catch-up, you get unlimited storage of anything you choose to record, accessible from any device. The technology exists; the barrier is storage cost.
