VLC is the most-installed media player on earth, and it plays IPTV perfectly well. It is not the prettiest option — no channel grid, no EPG, no favorites — but it is free, runs on literally every platform, and plays virtually any stream format. If a stream does not play in VLC, the problem is almost certainly the stream itself — which makes VLC the perfect diagnostic tool before you blame your player.
Two approaches work:
VLC loads the playlist and shows it in the playlist panel. To switch channels, use Play → Playlist (Ctrl+L) or press the playlist button in the bottom bar.

Sometimes you just want one channel — a sports event, a news channel. Copy the individual stream URL and paste it into Open Network Stream. This also works for testing: if a channel plays in VLC but not in your main player, the stream is healthy and the player is the issue.

This is a manual record — start it when the program begins, stop it when it ends. For scheduled recording, TiviMate or a dedicated DVR setup is better (see VOD and catch-up).
Being honest about the limits saves you an hour of frustration:
Usually means the URL is malformed or truncated. Re-copy it from the dashboard. Also confirm your subscription is active — expired accounts return errors on every stream.
A codec issue on your machine. Update VLC, then check Tools → Preferences → Input/Codecs → Hardware decoding — try disabling it once to see if software decoding fixes the picture.
