VLC and Kodi are the two desktop media applications everyone compares, and both can play IPTV — but they are built for different jobs. VLC is a player: launch it, watch something, close it. Kodi is a media center: a library, a TV-interface, add-ons, and a home theater experience. This comparison is about which one serves IPTV better, depending on what you want your TV night to look like.
VLC is a lightweight, universal player. Open a file or URL, and it plays. It has no library, no metadata, no interface to speak of — and that is the point. It is fast, stable, and runs on anything with a screen.
Kodi is a full media center. It scans your library, scrapes metadata, presents a 10-foot interface for TV screens, and extends itself with add-ons — including IPTV clients that give you a proper channel grid and EPG.

Kodi does not do quick. You install an add-on (PVR IPTV Simple Client or Xtream Codes Client), configure it, enable it as a PVR client, and restart Kodi. The first setup takes 10–15 minutes. The payoff: channels appear in a proper TV section with an EPG, category groups, and favorites.
This is where the gap is widest. Kodi with PVR IPTV Simple Client shows a full program guide — channel-by-channel listings, now/next, schedule ahead — and supports catch-up on compatible channels. VLC's playlist panel handles a few hundred channels fine; 24,000 channels become a wall of text with no categories, no search, no favorites. Kodi's PVR interface groups channels by category, supports favorites and search, and remembers your place in the guide. Kodi was built for libraries: poster walls, series collections, resume positions, even trailer support. With an Xtream Codes add-on, the VOD section of your subscription becomes a proper streaming-service experience. VLC has none of this — it plays files and streams, full stop. VLC is featherweight: it plays 4K on a Raspberry Pi without breaking a sweat. Kodi is heavier — a proper media center with database, skins, and add-ons. On a modest PC or a cheap streaming box, Kodi can feel sluggish where VLC is instant. Both are free and open source, so price never factors in.
If you just want to watch IPTV on a computer, start with VLC — it costs you nothing and answers "does this work?" in seconds. For IPTV as a TV experience, yes. For playing a random file on any machine, VLC is simpler and lighter. Most people keep both.
